What advice would you give to a new kitchen buyer?

When choosing the colour of your cabinets, I’d recommend narrowing it down to one or two favourite shades, and then take a moment consider how they will look in your exact space. Reflect on if the space is north/ south-facing and exactly how light may change the design of it. Magnet offers a sample service which I found particularly useful for seeing what the colour would look like in the actual space.

How did you decide on the colours and styles used in your design?

I love neutral, calming spaces and was immediately drawn to the Truffle Oil shade. I wanted a sleek, flat and matte finish to contrast textures with the rest of the space. It’s a modern slab style, and I choose a hexagon handle to go with it. This range has got a real tactile nature to it - it’s not glossy in any way, but it’s not too matte. There were a few options I really liked colour-wise to choose from, but it all came down to seeing them in the actual space, which allowed me to make the final decision.

What trends inspired your design choices?

Tactility in the home is popular in interiors now, and this was certainly something I wanted to factor in throughout the process. I opted for smooth slab doors to contrast with ridged splashback tiling and a rustic reclaimed brick floor for a considered amalgamation of textures.

The story

Luke underwent a full kitchen journey to achieve a new, on-trend space to enjoy with friends and family. This included building work and the removal of a wall to open up the space and make it more sociable.

Luke wanted a sleek, flat and matte finish to contrast textures with the design of the rest of the space, so opted for a modern slab door with contemporary, hexagonal handles. He chose the Soho kitchen range as he felt it was a perfect balance between gloss and matte.

Luke and his designer Felicity considered every element of the design, down to the last detail. Together, they ensured the kitchen encompassed Luke’s personal style whilst also retaining a high level of practicality through clever storage solutions.

They designed the space without any wall-mounted cabinets but created two half-depth cabinets to sit on the worktop, housing a pantry cupboard and a boiler to keep it out of sight.

The fridge, dishwasher and washing machine are now integrated making the space look much sleeker.

Luke now has a beautiful contemporary space filled with an array of textures that he can enjoy for years to come.
